5 out of 5 stars My darling Camera   August 17, 2010
Nadia
This camera has such quality in its opticals, in its reliability and durability, it has become my darling camera for most of my outings!
The only defects listed in ratings I read before purchasing, had to do with the short durability of batteries (It is a battery guzzler). This I solved with Sanyo`s Eneloop rechargeable batteries. Two AA`s will last me for about 250-300 shots without problems. They even outlast any other batteries when I use the motion picture (with sound) feature in the camera. (Yes ...I can film moving events in very low light, such as club shows). If you want go around without worries about missing a splendid shot, also buy an 8 or 16GB memory card and you are ready for any vacation, family event or the Grand Canyon!

5 out of 5 stars Battery Life Needs Attention   August 16, 2010
G. E. Lewis
I am quite happy with my Canon Powershot A590IS, with the exception of it's battery life. I can put in fresh recharged batteries, or fresh batteries, and in no time, the low battery life begins to flash, or the camera turns off and asks for new batteries. This has happened more than I wish to state. Other than this small mishap, I am pleased with my camera. There are many features which I am not yet fammiliar with, but am learning.

4 out of 5 stars Wish they still made them ....   August 13, 2010

I agree with most of the previous more detailed reviews. This is a very good point and shoot camera in its price range.

Good points:
- It isn't perfectly flat like most cheap p/s cameras. My larger hands like something to hold onto. Too bad this is a disappearing feature.
- It uses two AA batteries stored in the right hand side grip. Rechargeable NiMh batteries run about $2 each and can be recharged hundreds of times. Non rechargeables are everywhere. Proprietary (usually Li ion) format batteries are pure manufacturer Greed - vote with your pocketbook until there is some standardization.
- Good optical image stabilization and reliable autofocus.

Bad points:
- Its immediate and similar successor (the A1100IS) is out of production. The newest successors use Li ion batteries, have the hard-to-grip flat and tiny form factor and are loaded with unneeded sensor pixels (>12M) to jack up the price.

- The incredibly ugly 'software' (if you could call it that) that comes with the camera. A separate 'Camera Window' component used to transfer pictures consists of two independent windows (one fixed) that look like no user interface in the Windows, MacOS or Linux universe. Once you close CW, the editing component 'ZoomBrowser' is launched whether you want it to or not. Fortunately, there are free alternatives like digikam (Linux based) that recognize the AS590IS.

In a better world Canon would continue making this camera, maintain and improve the build quality and move the feature set down into a lower price range. Current <$100 p/s cameras are throwaway junk!

4 out of 5 stars MY THIRD DIGITAL CANON   June 28, 2010
U. DEFILIPPO (USA)
STOP searching.
Just BUY THIS CAMERA.
It does "it" at a good price.
The "good" reviews I read were TRUE.
I'm "content", I suppose...
and you will be too.

DON'T buy a KODAK crapper.
They have PLASTIC lenses.

HEY CANON... WHY NOT MAKE THIS MODEL IN VARIOUS COLOURS ?

I would have purchased TURQUOISE or PURPLE

3 out of 5 stars great pictures   June 21, 2010
Steve Vee (Granada, Nicaragua)
Great camera but don't expect it to last more than a year or so, battery door broken, dark burn spots against bright backgrounds, the video function is a novelty, lens sticky, sloooow especially w flash, all the markings have worn off but I plan on replacing it with another Canon point & shoot, my old Sony Cyber Shot is built like a tank, still works like new and takes crappy pics....
